Ben Stein view of science

Ben Stein (Click here, click on the “Behind the Scenes” tab, and go to the video for April 21th)

Stein: When we just saw that man, I think it was Mr. [PZ] Myers, talking about how great scientists were, I was thinking to myself the last time any of my relatives saw scientists telling them what to do they were telling them to go to the showers to get gassed.

Stein (speaking about the Holocaust): …that was horrifying beyond words, and that’s where science — in my opinion, this is just an opinion — that’s where science leads you.

Crouch: That’s right.

Stein: … Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people.

<I found this at Respectful Insolence and its astonishing how ignorant this Ben Stein is.

It was scientists sending people to the to be killed in the holocaust? Science leads people to kill people? A tool used to better understand the world through empirical observation, experimentation and the scientific method leads people to kill others?
How can Ben Stein be so ignorant?

Funny, I would have thought they had nazi soldiers telling people to go in the gas chambers, not scientists :P
I guess all of modern agriculture and medicine being a consequence of science don’t count for much in his eyes.

And I’m sure no one has ever used a perversion of christian doctrine to do distasteful things *cough* but I guess if we’re allowed to selectively take examples rather than examine all the evidence then we can conclude whatever we want. Isn’t that what intelligent design is all about?
