Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.
Okay what is the point of these genealogy’s?
2 sau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;
3 And Bashemath Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth.
More polygamy.
Wait! Wasn’t Bashemath the daughter of Elon?
And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
14 And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau’s wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.
15 These were dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kenaz,
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
Israel (Jacob (yes were talking about his dumb ass again)) loved Joseph more than any of his other children.
Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
The Ishmeelites took Joseph to Egypt
And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.
Or was it the Midianites?
And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
God killed Er cause he thought he was “wicked”
8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
Judah tells Onan to marry his brothers wife so he does.
Because he pulls out God kills him? Cause he pulled out?
15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.
16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
Judah’s doughtier in law dressed up as a prostitute and he then has sex with her.
And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
She “played a harlot” and cause of that she has to be burned to death? The most horrible way to die.
27And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
Cause there mother “played a harlot” her sons born caus of it are given a “scarlet thread”
And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither
So it was the Ishmeelites. But why did 37:36 say it was the the Midianite.
What do you think, please, of Obadiah Shoher’s interpretation of the story? (here: samsonblinded.org/blog/genesis-37.htm ) He takes the text literally to prove that the brothers played a practical joke on Yosef rather than intended to murder him or sell him into slavery. His argument seems fairly strong to me, but I’d like to hear other opinions.

Gen 37:28 Two terms for the same people…Ishmeelites are the offspring of Ishmael and the Midianites was a more specific reference. In context this is pretty plain.
And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
God killed Er cause he thought he was “wicked”
…. Seems consistent and well within the realm of being God. God gives and God takes away. Seems also that God KNEW he was wicked. Even governments are allowed to “slew” wicked murderers. ie Iraq and Sadaam, for example.
And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
Goodly? He wanted to burn a pregnat woman to death for “played a harlot”
…. Judah was the one that wanted to burn, etc Joseph is not Judah seems like you are twisting and stretching. A little thinking might help before declaring anything about this since it only exists in your own mind.
10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
Judah tells Onan to marry his brothers wife so he does.
Because he pulls out God kills him? Cause he pulled out?
… what was the root of the action? He disobeyed his father and their tradition and it was evil. Not just the act which is not in itself evil, but the reason behind why he did it. God controls life and death and ALL have died at God’s time and for His reasons.
… Apparently she didn’t burn to death, since she gave birth later. Judah was probably wrong to want to burn her, so what are you the “thought police?” LOL
30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
Cause there mother “played a harlot” her sons born caus of it are given a “scarlet thread”
… Perhaps you are referring to the “Scarlet Letter” book that may have used this reference to come up with its title. I doubt it was the other way around. You may be giving this detail too much significance.
